After a making its mark in the international film festival circuits & creating a bang with the western audiences, Slumdog Millionaire has finally come to India . It released in India a day after it got 10 Oscar nominations & was tipped favourite for the Best Film award.
But Danny Boyle's Rag to Riches saga of young Jamaal Malik disappoints. It is cliched from the Indian Movies of the 70's . It turns out to be a spicy entertainer, fast paced & very well directed. But the reality which the film is said to portray is something which I dont think many Indians will be able to digest.
Jamaal Malik is a slumdog who due to a gift of fate makes it big on the gameshow " Who wants to be a Millionaire". He's on the verge of winning the Million when he's arrested on charges of cheating. There unfolds his story & we go with him.During his interrogation, he reveals how he is able to answer the questions. It turns out that each question reminds him of an incident in his life. And fortunately for him, he knows the answers to the questions asked to him. Interlaced with this is Jamaal's love for Latika, another slumdog , in search of whom he actually appeared in the game show.
Superb direction & an awesome screenplay make sure that you dont yawn or check the time while the film's on.But what disappoints is the lack of logic which makes it equal to seeing Singh is Kinng.
The film has an "A" Rating .This is explained by some really strong dialogues at times & some repulsive scenes. These repulsive scenes make you feel bad about India. And that part of the film is what i really hated.
The casting is brilliant & everyone fits their roles perfectly. But it is important to note that no single actor played a pivotal role in the film.It was a collective team effort & Danny Boyle as the director takes away all the credit for executing it with great efficiency.
No review of Slumdog Millionaire can be complete without a mention of A.R.Rahman's music.A film which was virtually unknown until a couple of weeks back catapulted to popularity due to A.R.Rahman's success. It is the best positive that i can take from the film.Though not his best , the entire album does show you that it is trademark Rahman work .
Overall a great film to watch. You can surely take the liberty of slapping any idiot who calls the film realistic !
