Wow Wednesday !!
This was easily my favourite film in 2008. Naseeruddin Shah,Anupam Kher,an awesome script & excellent dialogues. What more can you ask for. This deserved an Oscar Entry from India rather than Taare Zameen Par. Debutant director Neeraj Pandey gives you more than entertainment at the end of the film. An excellent example of the so-called "multiplex cinema " phenomenon. The film is not a commercial potboiler, but it surely is a must watch for every indian. The film is Anupam Kher's , The Police commisioner of Mumbai's ,narrative.
One man (Naseeruddin Shah) calls up the Commissioner of Police (Anupam Kher) with a hard bargain- give up 4 terrorists or see Mumbai go up in flames. 5 bombs planted in the entire Mumbai city. The only way the Police can prevent this- release the 4 most dreaded terrorists currently held by them.
And mind you, the man isnt any other Tom,Dick or Harry. He knows how to operate in secret. He is fully equipped- right from using a laptop to switch sim even during calls (to prevent the police from detecting his location) right upto using the Media for getting information on whats happening at ground Zero.
There is a media in the film, yes,a media exactly similar to the real one.A media which dwells upon really insignificant stories to sell their channels. How the man uses the media to know what is happening is something we should all know because that is what happens in real too.
The first three quarters of the film shows how the police reacts to the sudden upheaval. The four terrorists are released according to the man's demand at a decided location. The Police cops who accompany them ( Amir bashar & Jimmy Shergill) however retain one of the terrorists for safety purposes.
When they move away from a bench where they left the other 3, a phone starts ringing below the bench.Oe of the three picks the phone up & BANG, a bomb explodes. It was not an attempt to free them.It was an attempt to kill them !!!
What follows is the best part of the film. Shah explains his actions over phone to the Police & the lone surviving terrorist. This part of the film shows you why a thousand SRK's can never replace Naseeruddin Shah. The brilliant delivery of the great dialogues & the energy that he shows are absolutely awesome.
I have quoted some dialogues here.Really thought provoking:
Today,it is indeed more than irony when you observe that 26/11 was a Wednesday. You like a film close to reality ? Forget Slumdog.....Try this out !

- "I am a common man, who is now scared of wearing a beard or a Mohameddan cap, thoughtlful while naming a shop, so that he doesnt get caught during a riot.Whatever it is, a fight between politicians, a flood, it is me,a common man, who suffers".
- "When a cockroach enters your house, u dont tame it,you kill it.These 4 cockroaches were dirtying my house.so i wanted to kill them."
- "We are resilient by force , not by choice."
- "No bastard can press a button and decide when I should die."
